Actors sought for final play

     (NWPR) – Since 1988, New World Arts have been dedicated in their mission in the production of quality plays. George Bernard Shaw

“Mrs. Warren’s Profession” written in 1893 by George Bernard Shaw, it was highly noted controversial in its time. Auditions for this comedy are being held by appointment by contacting its NWA’s director, Brittany Gardner-Kennel at fayelou2@yahoo.com or call 574.612.3677.

     The play, after being published in 1898, it was immediately banned from public performance. The cast, crew and stage manager were all arrested after opening night of a private performance and charged with “offending public decency”. The rest of the performances were canceled.

     It’s also fun to note that before the show opened, tickets were being sold for nearly $60.00 on the black market. Shaw’s brutal interpretation of the social injustice concerning the status of women was not well received. It wasn’t

until 1925 that the play was permitted to publicly perform. It ran successfully for 68 performances. Today, the play is highly respected and has been arguably considered Shaw’s best work, for its harsh jabs at social classes and etiquette is still very much appreciated in modern society.

     They characters are: Sir George Crofts, Mrs. Warren’s business partner. Age-50’s, stubborn in nature, very much blinded by his arrogance, and determined to make Vivie his wife despite all odds against him.

     Mrs. Kitty Warren, Vivie Warren’s mother. Age-40 to 50 is incredibly manipulative but clever and strong-willed. She could be thought of as less than appealing in mannerisms, but can hold herself well in all social classes if need be.

     V ivie Warren is Mrs. Warren’s daughter. Age-22, highly educated, strong, attractive, and takes pride in her independence and her work ethic.

     Frank Gardner, who is Rev. Gardner’s son, is Vivie’s romantic interest. Age-20’s, is incredibly charming, but is lacking tact.

     Rev. Samuel Gardner is Frank Gardner’s father. Age: Over 50 is a clergyman and a father who fails to gain respect in either role despite his best efforts.

     Mr. Praed is Mrs. Warren’s friend. Age: Middle aged is artistic and unconventional in nature, but very amiable with considerate manners.

     Those casting for the parts, there is no beforehand preparation required because all cold readings are provided.
