Still on view at the Anchorage Museum through Sunday, February 9, 2014, the 39th Annual Alaska Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition showcases the best work by Alaska’s watercolor painters. Formed in 1974, AWS was formed to promote professional watercolor painting in Alaska.
The winners were: Best of Show, “Hometown Holiday” by Jean Watson; First Place, “Paddle To The Glacier” by Dot Bardarson; Second Place, “Moo Valley, CA” by Frank Eber; Third Place, “Out My Window I” by Heather Tauschek; First Honorable Mention, “Creek In Winter” by Christine Fortner; Second Honorable Mention, “Pont St-Benezet, Avignon II” by Mark McDermott; and Third Honorable Mention, “Giving” by Elizabeth Dawn Gillette. This exhibition delivers a wide variety of styles and subjects, from representational to abstract and from traditional still lifes to contemporary portraits.
Juror Donna Zagotta has won several awards from the National Watercolor Society and American Watercolor Society. She has been a professional watercolorist for more than 20 years and has taught workshops across the United States since 1990.

Editor’s Note: The Society will meet Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at the Sourdough Mining Company in Anchorage beginning at 6:00 pm for the Social Hour & Dinner and the general meeting starting at 7:00 pm. Guest speaker will be Mike Dunham, Arts Editor for the Anchorage Daily News, who will talk about what an artist can do to get his or her work in the newspaper as well as he will also cover aesthetics in general on- what makes good art and how does one manage to translate that into words, including the importance of creativity.
