(AAPNW) – The Pultizer-prize play, “Picnic” made its debut at Broadway’s Music Box Theatre in February 1953 and ran for 477 performances. Beginning on Thursday, September 23 at 7:30 pm, the lights, camera, and a new whole lot of emotional action rebirths again, but this time on the main stage in the Studio Theatre at Huntington University, their rendition of this classic will bloom with the challenges of young love.
Directed by Jay Duffer, this HU seasonal opener tells the story of Flo ‘Madge’ Owens (Samantha Freeman) and her two daughters (Mary Russell and Courtney Swenson). Owens’ life is turned upside down when a handsome young drifter (Philip Black) arrives in her small town in Kansas. The young man comes to town to find his old college roommate and friend, Alan Seymour (Nick Kight), in hopes of landing a high-class career and turning his life around. But things change when the young drifter lays his eyes on the town beauty, Owens, who just so happens to be the girlfriend of his college comrade. Sparks fly and tensions rise as the attraction between the two is almost immediate and will change the lives of their friends and family forever.
The other performing dates are: Friday, September 24 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, September 25 with a 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm showing. The Studio Theatre located in the lower level of the Merillat Centre for the Arts at Huntington University.
