(AAPNW-KY) – On view through July 23 at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft in Louisville, “David Sharpe: Re-Defining Sunsets” exhibit features works by Owensboro, Kentucky native son, David Sharpe. “Sharpe’s intuitive senses are uncanny, as if he were working purely from an instinctive, compulsive-obsessive tradition,” said Chicago based folk art dealer Carl Hammer. “Yet he remains in control throughout, utilizing a display of dynamic interaction with ideas and subjects, all drawn from daily experiences while also addressing the traditions of both academic and outsider painting.”
Artist Sharpe has mastered his way of looking at the real world, painting it in a new and personal way. Whether looking at a sunset or creating a study of a still-life scene, his experimentation does not end up cliché-like. His unending inventiveness and the void of stylistic sentimentality result in a vision full of incisive humor, yet permitting us to better “see” the human experience in a marvelously unique way.
The display are landscapes, still-lifes and portraits rendered in oil on canvas, pencil and watercolor on paper, and mixed-media (pencil, oil and collage) on board.
