New works on gallery walls

“Trapeze Artists,” acrylic on canvas, 12” x 16”, photo and painting by Christine Klinger.

New abstract paintings by Christine Klinger are on view through September 2012 at Springs Gallery in Yellow Springs, Ohio. The show includes pieces from the artist’s recent abstract “Undersea Circus” series.  A reception is set for Friday, July 20 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, which coincides “Fling in the Springs” – the Village’s Third Friday. Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.

“I have always been attracted to the circus. I love the fantasy of running off to join a troupe of artists whose whole life is travel and performing. When I was younger I studied dance for many years and I had a child’s trapeze on my swing set. I used to pretend I was a circus performer: the skilled and graceful bareback rider, the comedic, trickster clown and, especially, the daring, free-flying trapeze artist. I see the circus as containing countless metaphors for life, love and art, and I enjoy thinking about these as I paint. I like to paint intuitively, where anything can happen. For example, as I began to work on the first piece in my circus series, it spontaneously ‘told me’ it wanted to be underwater; so I went with the flow, so to speak,” said artist Klinger.
