BRIEF ABOUT:  Marvin Hamlisch will pick up his conductor’s baton for a survey of timeless songs from stage and screen. With a musical sweep that ranges from poignant drama to classic Americana, the evening will also feature a special guest or two.

BRIEF ABOUT: Adapted from John Adams’s opera of the same name, Dr. Atomic & Mr. Haydn tells the story of Dr. Robert Oppenheimer and the dawning of the nuclear era. Renowned for his impressive technique and deeply felt musicianship, pianist Jonathan Biss will join the orchestra for Brahms’s First Piano Concerto, an expansive work rich with lovely details.

BRIEF ABOUT: Chances goers to Valentines with Johnny Mathis will never forget when he joins the orchestra as he’ll sing some of his biggest hits and share songs from his latest album of classic tunes, Let It Be Me – Mathis in Nashville.

TITLE: Ballet Folklórico de Antioquia, Columbia

BRIEF ABOUT: A show of lights, music, dance, brilliant costumes and unforgettable melodies to tell the story of Colombia’s cultural traditions. From the seductive rhythms of the cumbia to the sublime ritual of the San Agustín dance, the performers will take the audience on a moving journey through one of South America’s most enchanting lands.

TITLE:  Ann and Monroe Carell Family Trust Pied Piper Series

BRIEF ABOUT: Featuring the Magic Circle Mime Company, this concert incorporates the music of Mendelssohn, Strauss, Grofé and more into a lively theatrical romp entitled: Music, Noise & Silence with Conductor Kelly Corcoran.

WHEN: Saturday, February 18, 8:00 pm.

TITLE: Bruce Hornsby

BRIEF ABOUT: For this Special Event solo performance at the Schermerhorn, Hornsby, after 25 years winning a Best New Artist Grammy and launching one of contemporary music’s most diverse careers, will tap into many of the genres that have influenced his artistic output over the years, from pop, jazz, bluegrass, country and modern classical music.

WHEN: Tuesday, February 21, 7:00 pm.

TITLE: James O’Donnell

BRIEF ABOUT: Organist and choir master at London’s Westminster Abbey, including one of Britain’s exceptional musicians, who has also performed across the globe as well as took part in the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, has designed a program for the Special Event that will shine the spotlight on the sound of the Martin Foundation Concert Organ.

WHEN: Thursday, February 23, 7:00 pm; Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February25, both 8:00 pm.

TITLE: SunTrust Classical Series

BRIEF ABOUT: Mozart & Copland: Daniel Bernard Roumain says his inventive musical meditation on the President of the United States “should be listened to, could be danced to, and [is] an orchestral event that must be seen.” Copland captured the soul of the nation in his music, and his Symphony No. 3 incorporates his famous Fanfare for the Common Man. In between these two pieces, Angela Hewitt joins the orchestra to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20, one of the composer’s most dramatic works and one of only two he wrote in a minor key.
