Preble taps good, better, best in show

     (PNAN-VA) – When artists decide how to arrange the subject within the confines of the picture space, they are using a process called “composition.” The purpose of composition is to make the work as interesting and expressive as possible, and in the Peninsula Fine Arts Center’s Genesis 2011: College Student Juried Exhibition, Pfac curator and program director Michael Preble, who judged the competition, he found all the elements of creativity or imagination of good, better and best.

     On view through May 8, this show also provides the winners to showcase their work in a professional gallery alongside their peers, who are: Best in Show $500, Ann C. Gaudreaux, College of William and Mary, Conch Serving Bowls, Stoneware; First Place $300, In honor of Mayor Ann Kilgore by Ed Kilgore, Marie E. Jarrell, Hampton University, 4 Views of Growth, digitally enhanced linocut; Second Place $200, In Memory of Señor Don Julio, Ryan Gunderlach, Christopher Newport University, Stare, woodcut print; Third Place $100, Given in honor of Ruth Peacock Feezor by Ann Talbot, Nicholas Denson, Christopher Newport University, April Showers, oil pastel; Honorable Mention $50, Jeromyah Jones, Hampton University, Soulyah, clay; Honorable Mention $50, John Shield, Old Dominion University, Human Touch, wood and metal; The Betty Anglin Award in Watercolor Given by Susan and Pac McLaurin $150, Michelle Williams, Christopher Newport University, White Sands with the San Andreas Mountains, watercolor collage; Photography Award In Memory of David J.
